Ahh, baby’s first halloween.
By baby I mean my first halloween…as a 29 year-old.
It was a dreary night with a strong, bitterly cold wind blowing clean off whatever leaves that were still hanging onto branches for dear life.
We decided to dress up in homage to one of our favorite show, Peaky Blinders. Season 5 had been released that year and we were just pumped about Tommy’s new political career. After careful brainstorming, serious thrifting and closet rummaging, we decided to meet at a bar that shall not be named due to the event that I will explain. We chose it because it came the closest to the style that matches the show. It was dark, woodsy, musky, overall Peaky Blinder feel to it.
We huddled into the bar, having do dodge falling branches and strong gusts of wind. The bar was pretty empty save a handful of quiet drinkers who glanced at our little group up and down, chuckled and went back to their buisness. I had brought my SLR camera along to snap a few photos. We bought their overpriced drinks just to be polite since we were using their space after all. A little while later the manager approached me to ask what we were doing. I explained we were having some halloween fun and that this was not a professional shoot. She asked us to stop and leave immediately.
I’m not going to lie, her reaction surprised me since we were paying customers and her bar was pretty empty in the first place, especially for it being halloween on the South Side. Either way, we left and haven’t gone back since. We went to a couple other ones where we were MUCH better received, recognized and appreciated even for our genius and hard work. Granted our ties and footwear were not very period but DO YOU EVEN SEE BECK’S GUN SLING AND FAUX RAZOR AND DEBB’S COLLAR AND OUR POCKET WATCHES?
Later while editing, I added a touch here and there to create a vintage effect. It was a fun project overall. I suppose it wasn’t so much for halloween that we did this, it was more because we are fangirling and wanted to dress up. And it just happened to be halloween lol.
